[ The towering gnelit trees are a testament of their endurance, trunks distorted over time but still capable of bearing the spiky fruit that they've easily come to be noted for with regular supply drops an unreliable expectation. There's still a few of those fruits now left, the great height being problematic for some, but not for all with the abilities or a way to be resourceful.
Red's taken out some of those solutions out from the bark and the branches, the arrows to be of use to someone later on, surely.
Currently high amongst the trees with Charizard keeping them steady up in the air, he lets one of those drop down. He doesn't want to pack them away next to the few fruits tucked away inside his bag where it might possibly break; any of the fruit he pulls from the tree, after all, gets plonked on into the bag without much care given, the luxury not easily possible with the pokémon holding it open underneath his neck. At least the tough skins can take it.
...But who knows how safe they'll be when Red misses the bag completely, and one of those hard fruits go dropping fast. There's nothing that can be done to save not, unfortunately the reactive startling noise he makes but just a sound, and not a spell.
Please nobody be boinked on the head. Otherwise r.i.p. ]
[ Has nobody told you to never throw spiky fruit around, Red?
Fortunately for him, and for Shuyi, she had already caught sight of him and his dragon companion among the branches when she chooses to approach, mouth opening to utter a greeting before she notices something being propelled her way and-- it's only by a combination of luck and rather enviable reflexes that she crosses her arms in front of her head and squeals in surprise. Only to have the fruit bounce off of the ground a few inches from her.
Ah. Maybe it was just the luck then. It's easy then to laugh it off, still giddy from the sudden rush of adrenaline. ]
[ He's gone over the list a few times trying to make sense of the reason why those names were on the list. Their mission had gone over as well as it possibly could, he thought but yet three people were still being punished.
He doesn't have to be a Red to know what Dagger means either. ]
FROM: estheim.hope@cdc.org
I'm sorry. If you find yourself needing anything, please let me know.
[ It's not unthinkable that the CDC would be capable of seeing even the recruits' very thoughts and she wonders if her own mind betrayed her. Maybe they knew that she isn't ready yet despite going through with the mission outwardly. If they had wanted to be rid of her, she would already be gone.
A punishment then is something she should be grateful for. But it's not easy. ]

Hope. I want to tell you a story I was told about the difference between pain and suffering.
FROM: suyumkhe@cdc.org
It's about two Garhla, young and old, when they see a beautiful woman drowning in the river. Only they have both taken vows never to touch a woman. Still the old one saved her then left her on the riverbank.
FROM: suyumkhe@cdc.org
Throughout the rest of the journey, the young one was quiet and angry until he yelled: "Why did you touch the woman? You know it's against our vows!" Then the old man turned to the young and said:
FROM: suyumkhe@cdc.org
"I've left the woman at the riverbank but you're still carrying her on your shoulder."
do you know my name? im the guy with the charizard. if youre who i think you are im sorry. i meant to contact you yesterday but i didnt. unless i did? i wanted to know how youre feeling

but if youre tired of people asking we can talk about something else.

i can tell you a story today
FROM: red@cdc.org
if you dont want to talk today then take care. rest well
[ Clearly I didn't help enough is the first phrase that comes to mind. But that's not a burden for Mineva to carry. Even so, it takes her a while to reply. ]
FROM: suyumkhe@cdc.org
The CDC saw to it that we were all evacuated safely.
[ The eye could only see so far. The shallow ponds and clumps of yellow-grey grass seem to stretch into infinity, even if she knows that it isn't so. Only last night she slept under the stars among rocky outcrops that seemed more alive than this marsh. But it is a mercy, really, to have such a limited view of the world. How terrible would it be to conceive everything all at once; the past, the present and the future, the entire world rushing in all its joys and pains.
Like this, each day's struggle is rationed, bearable. Just so, Shuyi portions out her anticipation the moment she spots the first sign of life among the sullen water: another person, even, like an inkdrop of color on a black-and-white picture. ]
Am I imagining you?
[ Maybe she has gone entirely mad. Maybe her mind is only trying to be kind, when companionship is so essential. Maybe she is lucid after all, and the other woman is a bounty hunter, here to finally end her wandering. Shuyi pulls out the largest of her blades, barely an arm's length, and points it toward the figment of her imagination. Better to be safe. ]
[ eska wasn't thinking of the marsh at all, but of power. it is a drug from which there is no coming down. she inhales until her lungs are about to burst and squints her eyes at the distance to spot the pixels only to find none. imagine if she had to go back to that bubble in oblivion. life was rationed there, and it was constantly insufficient to satisfy her wants.
she laughs like an exclamation. she is unafraid and defiant. ]
I'll name you something.
[ the blades of her prosthetics slosh in the mud like two rowing paddles when she turns to face the other woman. each move marks her thighs, arms, cheeks with grey spatter. she doesn't seem to care. ]
Lulla. Because you look desolate. Do you like that name?
